.GIVING – The new domain specifically for fundraising

In December 2022, the .GIVING domain was launched to make it even easier to collect donations on the Internet to support good causes.

In this article I will explain to you what this domain is exactly, for whom it is useful and what are its advantages.

What does the .GIVING domain name mean?

The .GIVING domain is a new top-level domain (new gTLD), which was introduced specifically for the targeted collection of donations.

With this domain extension, a separate online area can be created, which makes it easier to get in contact with potential donors and supporters.

Who is .GIVING for?

The top-level domain was introduced specifically for organizations that pursue non-profit or charitable intentions. Similar to .ORG, however, .GIVING is not exclusively accessible to non-profit organizations. Basically, anyone can register it:

  • Non-profit organizations: Primarily, the domain is intended for all non-profit organizations dedicated to promoting social, humanitarian or charitable causes. Often it is about improving the living conditions of people and animals, as well as environmental protection. These organizations include non-profit organizations, foundations and associations.
  • Businesses: Companies that, for example, want to carry out a charitable project or support a fundraising campaign can also use the domain to make their cause even clearer.
  • Private people: In addition, the domain is also intended for people who want to support a good cause. Anyone can create a website under the domain extension to draw other people’s attention to an issue close to one’s heart and encourage them to donate.

Side note: The landrush conditions are omitted

During the launch phase, registration was not readily available. With the official market launch, however, these conditions have been dropped.

When registering in the landrush phase, one had to assure to use either the Blackbaud service for digital donations or the check-out solution JustGiving on one’s website. If the registry determined that neither of the two services was being used, it had the authority to delete the domain.

The advantages of a .GIVING domain

The willingness to donate was at a record level in Germany, despite the pandemic or high inflation in 2022. Around 16 million people donated around 3.8 billion euros to charitable organizations from January to September.

However, competition is also fierce, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to attract supporters to one’s own organization or project.

Using .GIVING for your fundraising page can give you several advantages for your fundraising:

  • Simplicity: With this ending it is obvious for potential supporters at first glance that it is a donation site. A donation area with a domain like organization.giving or good-purpose.giving is clear and easy to find.
  • Building trust: The .GIVING TLD was introduced by the Public Interest Registry. They are a non-profit organization themselves and enjoy a high level of trust around the world. They manage several domain extensions for non-profit organizations such as .ORG, .NGO, .CHARITY, .FOUNDATION and .GIVES. Thus, .GIVING can help to increase trust in your organization.
  • Stand out from the competition: In addition, the domain makes it possible to stand out from the competition with just their domain. Due to the large number of non-profit organizations, it is important for organizations to differentiate themselves from other organizations to achieve their own fundraising goals.
  • Higher recall value: Thanks to the only short existence of the domain extension, it is still particularly rare. This leads to a higher probability that corresponding Internet addresses are better remembered than those with conventional domain endings.
  • Higher availability: Just like the .ORG TLD, the .GIVING extension is aimed at organizations. However, due to the popularity of .ORG, numerous domain names are already taken. This is different with .GIVING: Due to the short availability, numerous available attractive domain names can still be found here.

Conclusion

The .GIVING domain is a new way for non-profit organizations and other charitable projects to get in touch with potential donors.
