.LY is the territorial domain name belonging to Libya. Currently managed by LYNIC, on behalf of the General Post and Telecommunication Company since its creation in 1988, there are currently approximately 16,000 registered .ly domains.
While its main use is by Libyan residents or companies, more and more foreign .ly domains are being registered, largely due to the popularity they have gained thanks to international services that act as address shorteners, such as bit.ly, owl.ly (owned by HootSuite) or Musical.ly (a social network for videos and music before it was merged with TikTok in 2018).
LYNIC allows registering any type of domain, as long as it complies with the law of the country and does not infringe on Islamic morality, so it is not allowed to register .ly domain names containing indecent or obscene words/names, including words of a sexual nature, nor is it allowed to use words or phrases that insult religion or politics, are related to online gambling or lottery.
